Granite:
Highly resistant and attractive rock known as porphyry, hard and tough, and therefore gaining widespread use as a construction stone. The average density of granite is 2.75 g/cm3. The word granite comes from the Latin “granum”, a grain, in reference to the coarse-grained structure of such a crystalline rock.

Marble:
Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks, either limestone or dolomite rock, or metamorphism of older marble. This metamorphic process causes a complete re-crystallization of the original rock into an interlocking mosaic of calcite, aragonite and/or dolomite crystals. The temperatures and pressures necessary to form marble usually destroy any fossils and sedimentary textures present in the original rock.
Slate:
Fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low grade regional metamorphism. The result is a foliated rock in which the foliation may not correspond to the original sedimentary layering. Slate occurs in a variety of colors even from a single locality. Slate is not to be confused with shale, from which it may be formed, or schist.
Travertine:
A sedimentary rock, it is a natural chemical precipitate of carbonate minerals; typically aragonite, but often re-crystallized to, or primarily, calcite. The rock typically remains quite porous with numerous cavities.
